What is Smart Film?
Smart Film is a switchable privacy technology that transforms ordinary glass into controllable privacy glass. It uses PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) technology to change from opaque to transparent when an electrical current is applied.
Unlike traditional privacy solutions such as blinds, curtains, or frosted glass, Smart Film provides instant, on-demand control over visibility. The transition happens in milliseconds—allowing spaces to shift from fully transparent to completely private with the flip of a switch.
Smart Film is commonly used in offices, homes, healthcare facilities, hospitality venues, and retail environments across Cyprus and internationally. It is available as a retrofit solution (applied to existing glass) or as part of factory-laminated Smart Glass panels.
How Smart Film Works
Smart Film operates using PDLC technology—a thin layer containing liquid crystal droplets suspended in a polymer matrix. The behavior of these crystals determines whether the film appears transparent or opaque.
Transparent State
When power is applied, the liquid crystals align uniformly. Light passes through the film clearly, making the glass fully transparent.
Opaque State
Without power, the crystals scatter light randomly. The film becomes frosted and opaque, blocking visibility while still allowing diffused light through.
Note: Standard Smart Film defaults to opaque when power is off (privacy by default). Reverse Smart Film operates inversely—transparent when off, opaque when powered.
